6 killed in Batangas road mishap

MANILA, Jan. 2 – At least six people were killed after a passenger bus rammed into the victims’ vehicle along the Star Tollway in Batangas shortly after noontime on Sunday.

Initial reports identified the fatalities as Francisco Zosimo, driver of the ill-fated jeepney; Elizardo, Joy, Laurence, all surnamed Festejo and residents of #18 Rizal Street, San Francisco Floodway, Cainta, Rizal; and a certain Jemel, who all died on the spot.

The sixth fatality, identified as Maricris Festejo, 10, a grade 5 pupil, was declared dead on arrival at the Batangas Regional Hospital where the other victims were rushed after the road mishap.

Injured were Frank Ace, Marilyn, Anabel and Aron, also surnamed Festejo. They are now recuperating at the Batangas Regional Hospital.

The fatalities and the injured were occupants of a passenger jeepney with licensed plate number PET-871.

Reports said the jeepney was bound for Lipa City from Batangas City at around 12:40 p.m. when the Gasat Express bus with licensed plate number TYK-287 rammed into it head on along Kilometer 98 of Star Tollway in Barangay Sabang, Ibaan town.

The passenger bus, driven by Aurelio Doctora, reportedly overtook a Nissan Exalta with licensed plate number SFB-447, driven by Geralyn Bagon, of Los Banos City, but collided head on with the jeepney.

There were no reported injured among passengers of the bus and the car.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said that investigations are now ongoing. (PNA)
