Ex-MMDA chief says Skyways looping is best solution to easing traffic in Mega Manila

MANILA, Nov. 7 — Skyways looping Metro Manila is the best remedy to decongest traffic in mega Manila giving motorists shorter travel time to reach its destination, the former chairman of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

Oscar Inocentes said that the Aquino administration should consider this long term solution that will surely boost the economy of the country because services and products will reach their destinations faster once the new highways are built.

“The expertise of Secretary Rogelio Singson who heads the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and his men can design state-of-the-art skyways that will connect all major thoroughfares of Metro Manila as well as the North and South Expressways,” Inocentes, also a former judge, said.

Inocentes claimed that the DPWH can also tap the services of private top caliber engineers and architects who can design new skyways that will bridge the gap between two expressways making travel time shorter.

With this big project which he knows needs a huge budget from the national government, the latter can also tap the help of big lending institutions of developed countries.

“New highways in the sky should be given top priority as we can no longer expand the existing highways,” Inocentes pointed out. “Should the project push through, more investors will surely come in that can produce more jobs which we needed most.”

Another way to produce the needed fund to finance the multi-billion peso project is to enter the build-operate- transfer scheme being offered by rich countries through grants.

He claimed that this had been his dream when he was designated to replace former MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando late last year but he was aware that his appointment will not last for long, that is why he concentrated his administration on removing colorum buses to lessen the volume of travelling vehicles along EDSA and other major thoroughfares in the metropolis.

“I know that this is band-aid solution as I also plan to implement number coding to further lessen buses plying the route of EDSA but the new administration appointed my replacement,” Inocentes said, claiming that he has no regrets and assure his successor to help him solve the problem of traffic in mega Manila.
