MANILA, Aug. 26 –Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim denied on Thursday that he issued a directive to arrest the brother of hostage-taker, which was believed to have triggered him to shoot his hostages last Monday at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, in Manila.

Lim was reacting to a statement of Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay, Manila Police District (MPD) director, before the Senate panel conducting a hearing regarding the bloody hostage that claimed the lives of eight foreigners, composed of Chinese-Hong Kong and Canadian citizens.

Reports said Magtibay said during the Senate hearing that the mayor was the one who ordered the arrest of Senior Police Officer Gregorio Mendoza, brother of hostage-taker Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza.

Lim said Magtibay could have rattled, the reason why he answered differently.

The mayor also said that Magtibay issued different statements when he held a press conference also on Thursday.

During the Thursday press conference, Magtibay said he voluntarily went on official leave as he claimed that he was assuming full responsibility for the outcome of the incident.

Magtibay, according to Lim, told reporters during press conference that he ordered SPO2 Gregorio Mendoza be brought to the headquarters after the hostage negotiator reported that he was inciting his brother not to yield to the police yet.

Magtibay also said that `the buck stops with me’, during the said press conference, even stating that he will not be blaming anybody else.

Lim said he was surprised to learn that Magtibay answered differently to the same kind of question posed to him during the Thursday press conference.

“During Thursday’s press conference that he ordered the arrest of the brother for inciting his brother not to surrender to police yet. But he said differently before the Senate panel,” the mayor said. (PNA) RMA/JES
