CHR tells law enforcers to respect rights of witnesses, suspects

MANILA, Aug. 21 – The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Saturday reiterated its call on all law enforcers, especially police officers involved in the investigation of an alleged torture case, to respect the rights of the witnesses and suspects.

This developed after policemen reportedly mistreated a critical witness – a woman who claimed that the torture victim was her husband.

CHR Commissioner Cecilia Quisumbing told reporters that said members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) picked up the woman Friday and allegedly held her against her will.

“They told her they need to 'investigate’ her and so she should go with them to the CIDG office. They didn't tell her she is free to say no and that she can make a statement another time,” Quisumbing said. (PNA) RMA/JCA
