MANILA, July 18 – Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas president Ricojudge Echiverri has invited all barangay officials to attend the association's third national convention which will be held on July 29-31 at SMX Convention Center at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Echiverri, who is also a Caloocan City councilor, said that barangay officials should exert all efforts to attend the event since one of its talking points is about the benefits of barangay officials as indicated in the Local Government Code.

It can be recalled that the same organization batted for the immediate implementation of Section 393 of the Local Government Code which enumerates the benefits that a barangay official is entitled to.

Ever since he took over as Liga president, Echiverri has sought before the national government the enforcement of benefits that should be accorded to barangay officials in the country.

Aside from this task, the Liga ng mga Barangay officials are also set to forward to President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III a resolution requesting the postponement of the barangay elections that have been slated in October.

The group had earlier pointed out that the government should take care of more urgent matters first, such as electricity woes, the effects of El Nino and even upgrading the equipment of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as its reasons to defer the barangay elections.

"The government should prioritize the upgrade of PAGASA and how to deal with the climate change phenomena than waste money again conducting the barangay elections," Echiverri stressed.

The Liga ng mga Barangay will also forward their request for the postponement of barangay elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate. (PNA) scs/PFN
