MANILA, July 10 –Newly-appointed National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director lawyer Magtanggol Gatdula on Saturday brushed aside doubts in the way he will deal the Dacer-Corbito case.

Gatdula assured that the Dacer-Corbito case and other pending controversial cases at the bureau would be among his top agendas when he formally assumes his post next week.

Gatdula cast aside doubts on how would he deal the 2000 Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito killing, considering that he used to be part of the defunct Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force (PAOCTF) before.

Despite of his association with Senator Panfilo Lacson, who is facing two counts of murder for Dacer-Corbito case, Gatdula assured that there will be no let up in their efforts to pursue the case.

There are reports that many doubted Gatdula to handle the case with fair, unbiased and objectivity since he is a former subordinate of Lacson.

“I know that NBI is focus on the Dacer-Corbito case for the past years and so I have to continue this work and even strengthen efforts to pursue works for the case,” he said.

He admitted that he was a former member of the defunct PAOCTF, then headed by Lacson, but reminded the public that he was never been involved in the case.

“I am now focused to serve as NBI director. I have to do what have to be done in the bureau,” he said.

He further said: “Even before the NBI is focused to Dacer-Corbito case and I have nothing to do except to intensify what has to be done.”

“I used to be part of the PAOCTF before. But my name was never been dragged to the case," he said.

Earlier, majority of the officers and members and of the NBI said they were demoralized over the appointment of an outsider for the position of director but assured that they would rally behind Gatdula for the good of the organization.

Deputy Director for Technical Services lawyer Reynaldo Esmeralda said they would not protest the appointment of the incoming bureau director.

“We want an insider to be appointed as NBI Director. Me and Deputy Director for Intelligence Services lawyer Ruel Lasala will be hypocrites if we say that we are happy that an outsider was appointed,” said Esmeralda.

However, Esmeralda said the NBI, as a professional organization accepted the decision of President Benigno Aquino III to appoint Gatdula, a lawyer and member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). Gatdula used to be the director of the Quezon City Police District Office,

“But as a professional organization, we have to accept the decision of the President. Definitely we have no choice but to welcome the appointment of General (Police Director) Gatdula,” he said.

Esmeralda said the president has already spoken and has appointed Gatdula.

“I have spoken to Gen. Gatdula this (Friday) morning and assured him that we will rally behind him for the good of the bureau,” he said.

“It will take time to heal the demoralization. I, we will assure support to Gatdula. We will help rally the rank and file to give support to Gatdula. There will be no protest because if we protest, the bureau will no longer be a professional organization,” Esmeralda said.

Esmeralda said they assured Gatdula of the smooth transition and support. “It’s but natural that some opposition would be aired. But we assure him of the support. We must set aside hurt feelings and work for the new Director,” said Esmeralda. (PNA) RMA/JES
