NPC submits proposals to DoJ for creation of ‘superbody’

MANILA, July 9 – National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) president Jerry Yap said Friday they have submitted proposals to the Department of Justice (DoJ) for the creation of a “superbody” which will look into the media killing.

Yap, in a letter to Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, said that the Justice Secretary has to create a body “with more teeth and more muscle" if she really wanted to put an end to the media killings.

He said, however, that the NPC has full confidence in De Lima, whom he said was a "staunch human rights advocate" and an "alter ego" of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.

“We are looking forward for media organizations to be a member of the “superbody,” Yap said.

"We know you believe in the indispensable importance and tremendous impact of the liberty of the press to bring about good governance. We know you sense clear and present danger to reporters. We know you hate to see a country without reporters," the NPC president said.

De Lima has vowed to create a "superbody" that would investigate the killings of journalists in the country. (PNA) RMA/JCA
