Crimea in Ukraine wants to be Cebu’s sister

CEBU CITY, June 29 – Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia has said she felt honored that Crimea in Ukraine is extending a bond of sisterhood to the province of Cebu.

She said this is a big sign that Cebu is being recognized not only here but around the globe.

”This is an indication that the international relations of Cebu is thriving,” Garcia said.

Like that of Cebu, the territory of Crimea was conquered and controlled many times throughout its history. Now Crimea is an autonomous Ukrainian administrative region.

Cebu has been associated with other provinces or states abroad yet this is the first time Cebu received a letter of acquisition of relations from an autonomous republic.

Last 2007, the Russian Federation linked up with Filipino businessmen to further establish their presence in the Philippines. They came to Cebu to look at its business environment and planned to expand their contacts.

The province also tapped international market for furniture exports last 2008 and saw Slovenia as a potential partner.

Now with this current prospect, the governor said she is inclined to positively respond to the letter soon. She said this sisterhood will likely include economic and cultural relationships. (PNA) FFC/EB/re
