DAVAO CITY, June 19 — Adidas Jabulani, the official match ball of the Federacion Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup 2010, will also be used as the official ball in the 2nd Acer Cup 23 Under Football Tournament set to kick off Sunday, June 20, at the Tiongko grounds here.

Organizer Edward “Chaya” Lam of Columbia Computer Center said, "We are doing this because of the FIFA World Cup fever and to inspire our teams to play much better just like their respective idols in the World Cup."

Lam also said a replica of the golden World Cup trophy will be awarded to the team champion, while miniatures of the trophy will be given to the Most Valuable Player, Top Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender and Best Midfielder awards.

“The selection of the individual awards, however, will be very strict since we are also giving away brand-new cellular phones aside from the small trophies similar to the World Cup,” Lam said.

The team champion will also earn 20 gold medals and cash prize, while the first and second runners-up will get 20 silver and bronze medals, respectively with cash prizes.

Invited to join are the defending champion Medvil Football Club, Columbia FC, Seagull-Porky’s Lechon, Ateneo de Davao FC, Ebocci FC and probably the Hooligans FC.

On the other hand, tournament chair David Dwight Penano, a match official of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), said two games will be played during the opening set at 3 p.m.

“We will be very strict on the rules just like the AFC tournaments in order to give our local teams a taste of an international event,” Penano said.

DFA president Rafael “Popsy” Vilela and general secretary Erwin Protacio are gracing the opening. (PNA)
