CEBU CITY, June 19 – Local retailers in Cebu will hold a conference on June 29 to learn new ways for their businesses to thrive.

The Regional Retail Conference, now on its fourth year, is attended by members and non-members of the Philippine Retailers’ Association-Cebu Chapter (PRA).

Topics include market knowledge, branding, intellectual property rights and green retailing.

PRA is expecting more than 250 delegates and chapter president to attend, Melanie Ng said.

”One serious topic is about the advantages of IT solutions to help retailers. The use of IT in retailing is new so we want to let our retailers know more about it,” PRA Cebu director Jay Aldeguer said.

Speakers from GFK will discuss the importance of IT solutions that retailers can adopt.

IT suppliers will be present during the conference.

Ng said some PRA Manila members will attend too because they want to feel the Cebuano market.

The retail sector is optimistic of better things under the administration of incoming President Benigno Aquino III.

Calamities are more threatening to business than a change of administration is, Aldeguer said. Proof of this is the destruction typhoon Ondoy caused on businesses.

”Retailers are immune to a change in administration and other typical challenges. It’s the natural calamities that pose a huge challenge to the industry,” said Aldeguer of the Islands Group.

The Cebu retail industry did not see a huge impact on its market last year and the first half of the year was positive for the sector.

”The first two quarters did very well for the sales sector, which can be attributed to the election-spending of the consumer market,” Robert go, president of Prince Warehouse, said.

Ng said investments continuously coming in have supported retail sales and have been very positive in the past few months, although sales performance also depends on the month. (PNA) scs/EB/bh
