CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, June 15 — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo led the inauguration, groundbreaking and inspection activities for various infrastructure projects during her visit to this province Tuesday morning.

Starting off the Chief Executive’s packed schedule for the day was a “soft opening” with an inaugural drive through of the road link connecting the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway.

Known as the Toll Road 3 (TR3) project, the road interconnect is a 7.6 kilometer highway that stretches from the SLEX extending from Calamba City to Sto. Tomas, Batangas, thereby connecting the SLEX to the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway 2.

With the highway link’s completion pegged at 99.77 percent, the closing of this particular highway loop is seen as a testament to the President’s advocacy to spur economic growth through controlled and well-planned infrastructure spending.

It may be recalled that the Chief Executive visited and inspected the site during her Urban Luzon Beltway Super Region tour last February 9 where she assured the completion of this vital infra project that links Metro Manila to the CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and the Bicol Region.

After the ceremonial drive-through, the President then broke the ground at Barangay Makiling here to signal start of construction works for the Toll Road 4 (TR4) project, a 54.20 kilometer stretch of highway that will link Sto. Tomas, Batangas to Lucena City in Quezon province.

As of June 4 this year, preparation of the parcellary plan to determine affected lots for acquisition is underway. Once completed, the mega project would significantly lessen travel time from Manila to Quezon province.

As part of the ground-breaking activities, the President led the lowering of the time capsule containing important documents such the project description, blueprints, and newspapers of the day.

After the ground-breaking activities, the President then conducted an inspection of the South Rail project by taking a train ride from Calamba City to Bicutan in Parañaque City. (PNA)
