MPD secret marshals kill one robber in Sta. Cruz

MANILA, June 12 –One of the three suspected notorious robbers was shot dead by secret marshals inside a passenger jeep during a foiled robbery in Sta. Cruz, Manila on Friday night.

The Manila Police District (MPD) ordered the deployment of secret marshals following numerous reports of robbery victimizing passenger jeeps.

Police described the fatality as between 30 and 40 years old, 5'4” to 5'5” tall, and sporting tattoos bearing the words “Batang City Jail” and “Popoy” on his right thigh and chest.

Supt. James Afalla, commander of the MPD Station 3, said two of the slain robber’s companions fled aboard a motorcycle.

April Novelas, one of the passengers onboard the Tayuman-Herbosa bound passenger jeep (NWV-727), said two of the three robbers, boarded the vehicle on Tayuman Street at about 2 a.m.

Upon reaching the dimly lit portion of Tayuman St., one of the robbers, who was seated at the rear portion, suddenly pulled out a handgun and announced the heist.

His companion also pulled out his handgun as they started divesting the passengers of their valuables.

However, unknown to the robbers two MPD secret marshals were also on board the passenger jeep. One of the two policemen in civilian clothes pulled out his gun and foiled the robbery. One of robbers got shot twice on his body when he tried to shoot it out with policemen.

The slain robber’s companions immediately jumped out of the vehicle and boarded a waiting motorcycle that was trailing behind the passenger jeep and sped off towards Ipil St.

The wounded robber was rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for treatment but he later died while undergoing medical operation.

Police recovered at the crime scene, an improvised caliber .38 revolver and a toy gun replica of a pistol type 9mm believed to be used by the robbers. (PNA) /JES
