Binay re-elected BSP prexy; Noynoy is Chief Scout

MANILA, June 11 – Vice President-elect Jejomar C. Binay was reelected national president of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) in a board meeting held and election at the BSP National Office in Manila on Friday.

The national president is the second-highest post in the BSP hierarchy following the Chief Scout which will be occupied by President-elect Benigno C. Aquino III.

By virtue of Republic Act 7278, the law governing the BSP, the President of the Philippines automatically becomes the Chief Scout once he assumes office.

President Aquino will succeed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He will become the 5th Chief Scout by virtue of the Law. His mother, then President Corazon Aquino became the 1st Chief Scout under RA 7278.

Binay first became BSP national president in 1994 to 1996 and was reelected for six consecutive years as president of 2.3-million strong youth organization starting in 1999.

Binay is concurrently the Chairman of Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Committee of the World Organization of Scout Movement, the umbrella organization of all Scout organizations in the world.

Binay took a leave of absence from the BSP to campaign for vice presidency. He joined the executive board meeting on June 5 in time for the election of officers where he was unanimously elected.

Aside from Binay, elected were Davao City Councilor, Wendel E. Avisado – senior vice president; Marikina City Mayor Del R. De Guzman – vice president for Luzon; Atty. Arturo V. Umbac – vice president for Visayas; former Misamis Oriental Vice Gov. J. Miguel J. De Jesus – vice president for Mindanao.

Enrique B. Lagdameo was re-elected national treasurer while Dr. Pedro D. Destura and Cabadbaran City Mayor Dale B. Corvera were voted chief national and international commissioners, respectively.

Appointed to different posts were Dr. Virginia L. Penafuerte, national training commissioner; Pepito M. Carpio, national program commissioner; Maximino J. Edralin Jr., national public relations commissioner; Jose Eduardo C. Delgado, assistant national treasurer;

Atty. Jose Ma. Gastardo, deputy international commissioner; Romulo V. Brillantes, deputy chief national commissioner for Luzon; Palo, Leyte Mayor Remedios L. Petilla, deputy chief national commissioner for Visayas; Iligan City Vice Mayor Henry C. Dy, deputy chief national commissioner for Mindanao. (PNA) vcs/JCA
