MANILA, May 14 — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s appointment of a new chief justice is a “legal and constitutional act” and refusal to recognize the new head of the Judiciary might lead to a “constitutional crisis”.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Charito Planas made this statement on Friday amid continuous opposition to the President’s choice of a new chief justice.

The President named Supreme Court Justice Renato Corona to succeed incumbent Chief Justice Renato Puno when he retires on Monday, May 17.

“All of us, including the President, must follow and respect the law,” Planas said in a news conference in Malacanang Friday morning.

“Let’s give respect to a co-equal office (the Judiciary) for a smooth management of the country,” Planas said. (PNA)
