Another people power is a childish act, says Melo

MANILA, May 3 – Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Jose Melo branded as a childish act the threat of a new people power if there will be failure of elections.

Melo was referring to the statement of Liberal Party (LP) presidential bet Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, which he labeled as a conduct unbecoming of government leader.

“It should not be like that to start a people power if you lose, it’s like a child claiming that he won the game… what we should do is to respect the process,” the poll body official said.

Aquino earlier raised the idea that the public might exercise their sovereignty again through people power once the scheduled elections fail.

The LP standard-bearer’s statement did not only get the attention of the poll body but also the thoughts of Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales.

On Sunday, the Cardinal said the idea of having another people power revolution was simply crazy and the people who were raising it manifested their irresponsibility.

However, Melo said that Aquino’s statement was not meant to scare off the people but part of the political strategy.

“It’s not really meant to scare the people naman but it is a psy-war… against their opponents,” he said.

Kontra Daya, a multi sectoral election group contradicted Rosales’ statement saying it would be worse if the people would just ignore it despite having doubtful election results.

Sr. Mary John Mananzan of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) said that the people should be allowed to fight for their rights if these were being ran over already, she said. (PNA)
