KMU, Anakpawis to lead protest action in Davao’s Labor Day celebration

DAVAO CITY, April 30 – Thousands of progressive workers and members of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) in Southern Mindanao Region and Anakpawis party-list will converge at the Rizal Park here, where the main program will be held at 10 a.m.

KMU-SMR chair and Anakpawis Party-list coordinator Romualdo Basilio said the group unveiled their labor agenda to the national candidates few days before the Labor Day celebration.

Basilio said thousands of workers and Anakpawis throughout the Davao Region were expected to join the actions in Davao City on Labor Day, led by KMU and Anakpawis.

Basilio said this year's commemoration of Labor Day would highlight the workers' presentation of the labor agenda to national candidates and labor's assessment of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's nine-year rule.

National and regional protest actions will likewise take place in Metro Manila, Baguio City, Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, Cebu City, Bicol, and in the Caraga Region.

"Millions of working Filipinos will cast their votes on May 10 with hopes that the country and the government will be better for the next six years. With the labor force standing at 35 million, workers represent a vast majority that the next administration cannot simply ignore. All presidential candidates are saying that they are pro-poor and that they will end poverty and corruption. We want to hear what these candidates would do to address low wages, joblessness, labor migration, poor working conditions and violation of labor rights and standards," Basilio said.

Basilio said they urged all Filipino workers here and abroad to vote for candidates that will support the following demands and challenges:

— Passage and implementation of legislated wage increase across the board for all workers;

— Promotion of worker' rights; stop the criminalization of workers;

— Review of the Labor Code of the Philippines, reversal of laws promoting labor contractualization and flexible labor, and junking of the Assumption of Jurisdiction;

— Local job generation, reversal of labor export policies

— Control in the prices of commodities, penalization of big companies that overprice goods and services;

— Increase in budget spending for social services;

— Support efforts to liberate country from foreign debt dependence;

— Support efforts to liberate local economy from dependence on foreign market and capital;

— Justice for all the victims of political repression, trade union and human rights violations; and

— Trial and prosecution of the Arroyo administration for its crimes against the people. (PNA) RMA/Jessie L. Casalda/lvp
