NBI hunts down 5 more suspects in DepEd P4.9-M payroll robbery

MANILA, April 30 –The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) launched a manhunt against the five remaining suspects in last year’s Department of Education (DepEd) P4.9-million payroll robbery and related crimes.

This after NBI operatives exhumed the bodies of two suspects and arrested three others Tuesday in Marikina City.

NBI Director Nestor Mantaring identified the fatalities as Allan Bilbao and Abraham “Eric” Gicole.

The bureau operations resulted in the arrest of Albert Fabe Mata, 27, of 204 Suburban Subdivision, Cainta, Rizal; Freddie Saldana, alias “Ding”, 31, of 14 Bantayog St., Concepcion, Marikina City; and Cipriano Cabujal, Jr. an executive officer of Barangay Concepcion 1, Marikina City.

The NBI launched a hunt against Marlon Altizio, alias Cuadro; Romeo Tiamson; Jojo Gicole, a certain “Ada,” and alias “Jun-Jun.”

Head Agent Ross Bautista, executive officer of the NBI Office of Intelligence Services, said the breakthrough came following a complaint of kidnapping of Bilbao, who was last seen last April 20.

NBI operatives belonging to Office of Intelligence Services under Deputy Director for Intelligence Services Ruel Lasala exhumed Bilbao's body from a shallow grave in Monterey Subdivision in San Mateo, Rizal.

Gicole was dug up from an islet in the middle of Tumana River in Marikina City.

Bilbao and Gicole were suspected to be involved in the Dec. 28, 2009 DepEd payroll robbery in Marikina City. The group allegedly carted away P4.9 million cash intended for Christmas bonus pay for teachers in Montalban, Rizal.

NBI said due to "double-cross", Gicole, Saldana, Altizio, Tiamson, Cabujal and Gicole’s brother Jojo, abducted Mata and Bilbao.

Gicole’s group brought the two to a safe house in San Mateo. Eric Gicole allegedly killed Bilbao and buried him in a grassy portion of the mountain side of Monterey Subd.

Mata managed to escape. The killing of Bilbao angered Altizio and his cohorts who subsequently planned on getting even at Gicole.

They met Gicole in a meeting in Tumana, Barangay Concepcion, Marikina City. When Gicole arrived, Mata stabbed and slashed his throat causing his death.

Mata buried him near a nipa hut in Tumana.

Saldana and Mata were arrested who confessed to their participation on the killing.

The NBI is readying the filing of kidnapping with homicide, murder and robbery charges against the suspects. (PNA) RMA/JES
