MANILA, April 29 — Some 3,000 workers coming from the various labor federations and unions of the country will lead the celebration of Labor Day on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, in Pasay City.

Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D. Roque said this year’s Labor Day celebration will also be attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as guest of honor and keynote speaker.

Roque said the President is expected to deliver her valedictory keynote speech to the nation’s workers as this will be her last workers’ address under her nine-year incumbency as President.

He said the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the only labor center in the Philippines, will lead the Labor Day celebration with other labor groups like the Federation of Free Workers, Trade Unions of the Philippines and Allied Services, National Association of Trade Unions, Alliance of Filipino Workers, Associated Federation of Labor Unions, Confederation of Filipino Workers and National Mines & Allied Workers Union, among others.

Labor groups are expected to issue a workers’ endorsement of the ratification of International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention 187 (Occupational Safety and Health Framework) and 162 (Safe Asbestos Use) which will be handed over to the President and to the Secretary of Labor and Employment. A signing of commitment will then follow.

Roque said that during the SMX Labor Day program on Saturday, the TUCP will read and hand over a Labor Roadmap 2010-2015 titled “Towards Full Realization of Decent Work” which will highlight greater respect and promotion of core labor standards, productive employment, social protection (OSH, reproductive health, family planning, HIV and Aids, unemployment insurance) and social dialogue–engagement of labor in decision-making process at all levels.

Decent work as defined by the ILO is a concept whose primary goal is to promote opportunities for all women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity.

During the whole day affair, the TUCP will also put up booths for medical first aid/counseling on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and workers’ inquiry desk on labor- related concerns, asbestos campaign, and website registration for daily news updates. They will also put up a Voters’ Education booth.

On the other hand, the Federation of Free Workers will lead the prayer at the SMX program and participate in the livelihood lectures in partnership with the Filipino Inventors Society and other business groups.

Julius Cainglet, media director of FFW, said they will help showcase the Filipino inventions, saying that the FFW leadership believes that Philippine made and invented products are now highly respected and accepted worldwide.

Cainglet said they will invite the youth groups attending the job and livelihood fairs to participate in the lectures as these may enable them to market the new inventions and products and earn some decent income.

The attendees may also want to manufacture these products in partnership with the inventors, he said.

He added that their federation will also lecture on “on-line selling and marketing” in partnership with different groups who are in e-bay.

Cainglet said youth participants will have a “hands-on” computer training for on-line selling and marketing, adding that they will also lecture on how to start a business.

Various Labor Day activities will also be held at different sites in all the 16 regions throughout the country. (PNA) scs/V3/PR
