MANILA, April 26 – A 32-year-old man was killed in the big fire that struck a shantytown on Sunday afternoon in Quezon City which ended before dawn Monday, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) confirmed.

BFP arson probers estimated that P10 million worth of properties were destroyed as the fire razed 300 houses along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue near Araneta Avenue, Barangay Damayang Lagi.

The fatality was identified as Andres Donamico, 32, a resident in the area. Arson investigators believed Donamico could have died of suffocation because that smoke got through the victim’s unit even as his house was intact.

Donamico was believed drunk and had been sleeping inside his home when the fire broke out.

Three other residents were also hurt during the fire. They were identified as Anthony Jose, who suffered asphyxia; Romel Pilbe, who had a slightly burned chest; and Victorio Almen, who sustained second degree burns on his left hand.

BFP-Quezon City reported that the fire reached general alarm, the highest fire alarm. (PNA) LAP/JCA
