BIR collects toll VAT on May 1

MANILA, April 22 – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday said it is firm on its decision to collect the 12-percent value-added tax (VAT) from private motorists using the tollway facilities in the North and South Luzon Expressways starting May 1, Labor Day.

BIR Deputy Commissioner for Operations Nelson M. Aspe said if toll operators would not collect the tax, the BIR would order them to pay it out of their earnings.

Aspe said the BIR had been imposing deficiency VAT on tollway operators since the enactment of the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program (CTRP) in 1997.

The tollway operators have protested the yearly assessments sent to them, which now stood at several billions of pesos. (PNA) RMA/JCA
