DUMAGUETE CITY, March 27 –- Re-channeling operations for the Okoy River in Sibulan, Negros Oriental province is expected to go full-blast with Capitol’s issuance of permits recently to at least three reliable quarry operators.

Re-channeling is highly recommended to remove quarry materials that accumulated in the middle of the river, causing floodwaters to change course and this resulted in recent flooding in the area.

Quarry operators recommended for undertaking the work are Greg Uymatiao, Cana Solon and Medalia Sia.

The recommendation came during the meeting with Sibulan Mayor Antonio Renacia, the Provincial Environment Resources Division, stakeholders and provincial legal officer Erwin Vergara.

The three quarry operators have proven good track records in river re-channeling activities. They also have complete equipment and skilled personnel for the work.

Vergara said there is a total ban on extracting quarry materials near dikes.

He is seeking from stakeholders concerned understanding and cooperation in helping ensure the project’s success to avoid recurrence of flooding which killed several people and damaged properties last year. (PNA)
