Suspected NPAs burn heavy equipment in Agusan del Sur

BUTUAN CITY, March 24 — Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels burned the heavy equipments of a construction firm constructing irrigation project in sitio Baclesi, Barangay Angas, Sta Josefa, Agusan del Sur Tuesday evening, reports from the police and military here said.

The area is more than 100 kilometers away from this city, Caraga's regional center.

Official report from the Caraga Police Regional Information Office here said three backhoe and one bulldozer owned by construction firm Mark Built Corporation were burned by the rebels. The firm is working in a construction project of National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in the area.

According to police and military investigations, the construction firm received an extortion letter from the suspected NPA rebels, demanding P4 million. The construction firm refused to give in to the alleged NPAs' demand.

This is the fourth heavy equipment burning in the first quarter of this year alone.

Sta. Josefa Municipal Police Office in Agusan del Sur said they are now coordinating with personnel of the 26th IB Charlie Company, Philippine Army assigned in the area for investigation and hot pursuit operations. (PNA)
