Two motorcycle-riding armed men attack military checkpoint in Laguna

MANILA, Jan. 22 – Two motorcycle-riding armed men, believed to be communist New People’s Army (NPA)rebels, attacked a military checkpoint in Alaminos town in Laguna on Thursday, wounding a soldier and three civilians, a military commander reported Friday.

Army and Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel put up the checkpoint at San Miguel village at 8 a.m. Thursday “to check on the reported movement of armed men with high-powered firearms.”

The checkpoint was established in line with the peaceful conduct of the May presidential and local elections. The AFP the PNP had been authorized to establish checkpoints to contain the proliferation of loose firearms.

Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, 1st Infantry Battalion chief, said two motorcycle-riding men opened fire at the checkpoint at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday , wounding one Pfc. de Guzman, and civilian bystanders Arthur Bencito, 27; Emeraldo Pelagio, 32, and Miriam Espiritu, 34.

“Per evaluation of Pfc de Guzman, he was able to hit one of the suspects,” said Bacarro, adding the suspects were able to withdraw towards Sta Rosa village, also in Alaminos town.

Pursuit operations continue against the fleeing suspects. “Its positive they are NPAs,” said Bacarro . (PNA) RMA/VR
