67 students receive scholarship award from Zamboanga city government

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Jan. 12 — The city government has awarded scholarship certificates to 67 students of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and two other state colleges pursuant to City Ordinance No. 332, granting of academic scholarship to poor but deserving students starting school year 2009-2010.

Mayor Lobregat, who awarded the certificates Monday afternoon, said the city government scholars had been chosen from the top 10 of the class from different public secondary schools in this city and they are required to maintain a passing grade of 2.0 or its equivalent in their course.

Of the 67 awardees, three are enrolled at the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC) and three at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) with WMSU having the most number of scholars taking up four-year courses.

Lobregat has advised the students maintain good grades to be able to finish “your studies especially especially because you belong to the first batch.”

Lobregat said more students are expected to avail of the scholarship in the succeeding years.

So far, he said the city government had already released the amount of P335,000 for the scholarships during the first semester.

Similar amount will be released soon for the second semester.

Under the ordinance, each scholar is entitled to P5,000 tuition fees per semester. (PNA)
