10 flyovers before PGMA term ends

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 6 -– Construction is ongoing for 10 flyover projects in different parts of the country slated for completion before the term of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ends by June 30, 2010.

President Arroyo was here Tuesday to inspect the construction of the second flyover project here at the junction of Gen. Luna and Jalandoni streets.

The President said the project is her administration’s legacy to the people of Iloilo in helping solve the traffic problem of a fast growing city in the Visayas.

She, likewise, corrected public impression on the financial status of the project by saying the ongoing flyover is a project of the Philippine Government through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and funded with a loan from the French Government.

The proposed 282-meter second flyover project here is being constructed under the President’s Bridge Program, Mega Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project and funded by the French Government with French Supplier Matiere S.A.S.

Director Emil Sadain of the President’s Bridge Program Office, DPWH said the P386.5 million flyover project in Iloilo City will be completed by April 2010 or two months ahead of schedule by June 22, 2010.

Sadain said that there are 18 bridge projects under the program constructed in Western Visayas. These include 13 projects in the province of Antique, 4 in Iloilo including a flyover in Iloilo City and 1 in the province of Capiz.

The 17 bridge projects were already completed in 2009 and the second flyover project will be completed this year. The first flyover in this city was completed in 2008 along the junction of Infante-Gen. Luna streets.

The nine other flyover projects with ongoing construction are in the junction of Manila North Road Dagupan-Asingan Road in Urdaneta, Pangasinan; in the junction of Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road-Lazatin Avenue in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga;in the junction of Lacson Avenue-Lacson Circumferential Road in Bacolod City; in the junction of Araneta and Magsaysay streets in Bacolod City;

In the Marilao Highway in Marilao, Bulacan; in Naga City, Camarines Sur; in Puerto Sayre Highway in Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City; and in the Maharlika Highway-Tadeco intersection in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

On the other hand, Sadain said the proposed third flyover project in the diversion road here requested by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, was already listed by DPWH for implementation after the completion of the 10 flyover projects in the country.(PNA)
