SURIGAO CITY, Jan. 1 – Continuous heavy rains Friday night caused flooding in low-lying areas of this city causing some residents of the five urban barangays to evacuate.

Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra activated Surigao City Government’s Quick Response Team and conducted search and rescue operations in some areas in Barangays San Juan, Washington, Togbongon, Luna and Taft.

The Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative (SURNECO) shuts off power lines at around 9 p.m. in affected areas, particularly in low lying areas.

Rescued residents were hauled to different evacuation centers in the city.

The local DSWD office is providing food, medicines and other relief goods to affected families now temporarily staying at the different evacuation centers.

Casurra said evacuees will return to their respective homes if flood waters subside and everything will go normal this afternoon.

No casualties or damages to properties were reported due to flashfloods, Casurra said. (PNA) FFC/BS/utb
