MANILA, Jan. 1 – Families and their friends welcomed the New Year, the year of the Tiger on Friday morning with prayers, peace and unity across the nation.

Many family members woke up early Friday to have breakfast together as streetsweepers and househelps joined hands in cleaning the streets of the litters left by New Year Year’s Eve revelers late Thursday night.

A group of streetsweepers were seen by the Philippines News Agency (PNA) cleaning the streets of barangay Sauyo in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Businessman Gerry Chua, a volunteer firefighter and owner of Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli in Binondo, Manila said in a text message: “We wish you peace in your heart, health in your body, wealth in your life, joy in your home. May you always be blessed with these priceless treasures.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) officers also texted friends and relatives throughout the day such as Senior Inspector Rey Z. Medina, commander of the Bahay Toro Police Community Precinct (PCP) of QCPD station 3.

Astrologers said the Metal element gives the Tiger its sharpness in action and speed of thought.

Tigers born in the Metal year like to stand out in a crowd. With an inspiring assertiveness and competitive demeanor, they determine their goals and then do anything necessary to achieve them.

This good-looking character sometimes suffers from mood swings and temper tantrums.

The Tiger can be known to jump to conclusions or to act too quickly without weighing the options or understanding the consequences. This is a flaw Tigers must learn to curb.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, which begins on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011.

The Tiger is the third sign in the cycle of Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs.

It is a sign of courage. This fearless and fiery fighter is revered by the ancient Chinese as the sign that wards off the three main disasters of a household: fire, thieves and ghosts.

The Tiger Years are 1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, and 2010.

Famous tiger people are: Agatha Christie, Crystal Gayle, Cybill Shepherd, Demi Moore, Diana Rigg, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Hilary Swank, Jodie Foster, Marilyn Monroe, Mary Queen of Scots, Norma Shearer, Penelope Cruz, Queen Elizabeth II, Rosie O'Donnell, and Tom Cruise.

People born in the Year of the Tiger are generally well liked because of their charming personalities.

Often, failing at a given task or being unproductive in his personal or professional life can cause a Tiger to experience a deep depression. Criticism from loved ones can also generate this type of Tiger reaction.

Tigers are fond of competitions. They simply cannot pass up a challenge. They may appear cool and are unpredictable, and it would be unwise to underestimate their reactions.

Natural leaders, they have a strong sense of their own dignity. They are intelligent, alert, and farsighted.

Good strategists and tacticians, they often have a hidden agenda. As long as they do not risk their luck too often, and keep their restless nature under control, they will enjoy success and happiness. (PNA) LBV/JCA
