SURIGAO CITY, Jan. 1 — A store owner, her five- year-old son and a helper were killed in a New Year's Eve fire caused by a firecracker explosion in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, the police reported on Friday.

Senior Superintendent Roy Ga, Gingoog City Police director, said the explosion occurred at around 7 p.m. Thursday at Adens-Guibone firecracker store located near the Gingoog City Public Market.

Police said the explosion caused a fire that instantly killed store owner Jocelyn Guibone, her son and a female helper whose names were not immediately available.

Ga told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) in a mobile phone interview that the victims were inside the store when an unidentified customer lit one of his newly-purchased firecrackers known locally as “kwitis,” which accidentally entered the store, causing other firecrackers inside it to explode.

The Gingoog City policemen are still investigating the incident. (PNA) scs/Ben Serrano/utb
