DPWH vows to finish big road projects in 2010

TANDAG, Surigao del Sur, Nov. 3 –- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday vowed to complete the P1.7 billion Suriga-Davao Coastal Road and other mega infrastructure projects of Mindanao Super Region in 2010.

Aside of these State of the Nation Address (SONA) commitments of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, two other Presidential directive mega projects are also in full swing – the Lianga (Surigao del Sur)-Prosperidad (Agusan del Sur) Section and Adlay-Bon-ot (Surigao del Sur) Section, it was learned.

The on-going 24/7 ground works of the DPWH Surigao-Davao Coastal Road are the Package 3 Tandag-Marihatag Section, Package 4 Unaban-Sumo-Sumo Section, Package 5 Aras-Asan-Marihatag Section, Package 6 Salvacion-Lianga Section, Package 7 Lianga-Barobo Section, Package 8 Cortes-Buenavista Section, Package 12 Tagbina-Hinatuan Section, Package 13 Tagasaka-Bislig Section, Package 14 Bislig-Lingig Section and package 15 Lingig-Boundary Boston (Davao Oriental) Section.

Five Surigao-Davao Coastal Road SONA projects – Package 1 Amontay-Sto. Nino Section, Package 2 Marihatag-San Agustin-Lianga Section, Package 3 Tandag-Marihatag Section, Package 10 Boston-Bislig Section and Package 11 Bislig-Manay Section were already finished ahead of schedule, DPWH Caraga region said.

These projects were part of the development programs in Mindanao as announced by President Arroyo in her last SONA.

The Surigao del Sur-Davao Oriental Coastal Road, forms part of the country’s arterial road network and is classified as one of the roads with vital strategic importance.

It also serves as the trunkline for the coastal municipalities of three provinces that leads to the main Pan Philippine Highway as its terminal point. This road traverses the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga region) and Davao Oriental in Southern Mindanao (Region 11).

“We are trying to hit 90 percent accomplishment to the remaining SONA projects before the end of this year,” said Northeastern Mindanao Regional Director Dr. Evelyn T. Barroso.

She added: “When these big infrastructure projects are completed, people in this region and nearby region in Mindanao can move and work freely, thus economic condition will surely high”.

Another P1.5-billion Kapalong-Talaingod-Valencia Road in the Davao region and Northern Mindanao region also in full swing and set to finish in 2010. (PNA)
