DAVAO CITY, Oct. 26 — Members of the 1003rd Infantry Brigade launched a manhunt to capture two perpetrators responsible for the killing a soldier and wounding two civilians in a shooting incident 1 p.m. Sunday inside a church in far-flung Barangay Malabog, Paquibato District, this city.

Major General Reynaldo Mapagu, commander of the 10th Infantry Division, issued the order as he appealed for sobriety in pursuing legal remedies to bring the perpetrators to justice and ultimately serve the punishment due them.

Mapagu also condemned the incident calling it a total disregard to the safety of the civilians and contempt to a peaceful gathering in a community.

Captain Emmanuel Garcia, chief of the public affairs office of the 10th ID, identified the victim as Corporal Orly Pedregoza, a resident of Paquibato, assigned with the 10th ID Headquarters in Camp Panacan here.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the head and died instantly when two youthful armed men approached the victim and opened fire without provocation.

Garcia said the victim was attending a religiously festivity of the Philippine Independent Church where the soldier belonged, when the incident happened.

Two civilians namely Jeffrey Labtic and Jolito Atig, were caught in the volley of fire.

“He was defenseless and unwary of the danger while talking to his friends in the religious activity, when the two gunmen opened fire,” Garcia said.

Pedrogoza was the latest victim in the spate of killings allegedly perpetrated by the rebels in October in Southern Mindanao Region. (PNA) FFC/JSGD/lvp
