MAHAYAG, Zamboanga del Sur, Oct. 9 — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today pledged to fund 40 percent of this municipality’s equipment purchase for material recovery facilities in 25 barangays.

The facilities are part of this local government’s share to mitigate the effects of global warming by cutting down harmful green house gas emissions through recycling, waste segregation, and proper disposal.

The President made her pledge to local officials led by Mahayag Mayor Pedro Fanilag Jr., who attended a climate change and solid waste management briefing at the San Isidro Central School here.

She was responding to pleas from residents for financial assistance as fund allocations for the ambitious project was not enough to put up their own MRFs.

“I was told that the municipality of Mahayag needs P4.5-million to put up MRFs in its 25 barangays. I will fund P1.8-million as long as the remaining P2.7-million is taken from the budgets of the local government unit including the barangay, municipality, governor and the congressmen of the province,” the President said in Visayan.

“This way, the municipality of Mahayag and its barangays will have MRFs of their own,” she added. (PNA)
