MANILA, Oct. 9 — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is indignant over the attack on the residence of Social Security System (SSS) president Romulo Neri this morning.

In a media briefing in Malacanang this afternoon, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the President has ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a full investigation on the matter.

“President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has condemned the attack on SSS president Romulo Neri in the strongest possible term,” Remonde said.

According to Neri, two military trucks strafed his house in Quezon City for some two minutes Friday morning. Luckily, no member of his household was hurt.

Remonde said the President has also directed the PNP to strengthen Neri’s security.

He said the PNP has created Task Force Neri, a composite team of operatives from the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), to conduct the probe and provide 24-hour security for Neri.

According to him, ultra-rightist elements may be behind the shooting. The use of the military trucks could be a ploy to mislead Neri into thinking that the current administration had something to do with the incident, thus alienating him from it.

Remonde said that in his talk with Neri, the SSS president admitted having been shaken by the incident but nonetheless resumed his work particularly to attend to the President’s directive to help SSS members affected by typhoon “Ondoy” and “Pepeng.”

“Neri said this (attack) will not deter him from doing his job,” Remonde said. (PNA)
