MANILA, Oct. 5 — Alongside the relief and cleanup operations of the Philippine Army in Metro Manila, as well as in the provinces of Laguna, Pampanga, Rizal and Bulacan in the aftermath of storm "Ondoy," the PA is intensifying its anti-insurgency campaign and nation-building activities, resulting in the continuous surrender of members of local terrorist groups.

Reports reaching the Philippine Army headquarters disclosed that three New People’s Army rebels, including a political officer, surrendered to the elements of the 39th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Malawanit, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos said they were Jhony Camag, alias Rambo, Randy Salega @ Rusty, and Antonio Camag @ Rey, all members of the local terrorist group operating in Southern Mindanao Region.

"Their surrender is the latest in a series of surrenders of local terrorist group members in the province of Davao del Sur," said Burgos.

Meanwhile, 60 NPA rebels surrendered to various Army field units in the country for the month of September alone, bringing to 417 the number of NPA guerrillas who renounced armed struggle in the last nine months.

"As agents of peace, the Philippine Army shall continue to conduct peaceful and development endeavors all over the country with the end in view of providing an environment of peace and stability conducive to national development," added Burgos. (PNA) scs/VR
