IT-related businesses generate 12,236 jobs in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Sept. 29 – The sector of information technology (IT) operating in Western Visayas has employed some 12,236 jobless from Iloilo, data from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) showed.

DTI Iloilo director Wilhelm Malones said the industry has boosted the government’s thrust on employment generation.

Malones said the employment generated included businesses that are IT-related and not just the business process outsourcing (BPO) companies.

The eight BPO or call center business operating in Iloilo have provided jobs to 3,435 jobseekers, the biggest job generator among IT-related businesses.

Other IT-business establishments such as medical transcriptionist and software developers generated 1,828 jobs followed by government agencies with 675 jobs.

On the other hand, 160 internet cafés operating here have employed 479 while the academe generated 77 jobs.

Malones said they looked forward to more jobs that will be created with the coming in of a giant BPO call center firm from Europe which will open here within the year with an initial 800 to 1,000 seats. (PNA) LDV/PGLena/vlo
