Administration presidential bet known Sept. 16

MANILA, Sept. 11 — The administration’s Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD)-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) coalition will announce its standard-bearer for next year’s presidential elections on Sept. 16.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Gary Olivar said the announcement date comes a day after the deadline it set to agree on an official presidential candidate.

Quoting a text message from presidential adviser on political affairs, Gabriel Claudio, Olivar said that the official standard-bearer of the group will definitely be a bona fide member of the party.

The top two potential standard-bearers who topped the list voted by members of the party last Aug. 26, are after all, bona fide members of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, according to Claudio.

Claudio, however, failed to name the topnotchers in the party’s Aug. 26 voting, Olivar said. The top two possible official candidates are presumed to be Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando.

This indicates that a negotiation with an outsider may not be possible despite reports that the ruling coalition may hold talks with Sen. Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party on the possibility of becoming the administration’s official presidential candidate, Olivar said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, he said, is leaving the decision to the party. (PNA)
