BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 8 -– A wife of a communist-New People's Army (NPA) operating in Northeastern Mindanao wa among those killed in the Sunday and Monday gunbattle in Agusan del Sur, this was disclosed by a ground Army commander on Tuesday.

Col. Emiliano Gupana, commanding officer of the Army’s 402nd Infantry (Stingers) brigade, identified the alleged slain amazon as certain “Ka Sarah”, wife of certain “Ka Boyet Tindogan”, a ranking leader of guerrilla-Front Committee 34 of the CPP-NPA Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).

According to Col. Gupana, “Ka Sarah” allegedly held a key position in the communist rebel front which also carried out the raid on the police station of nearby Sta. Josefa town last July.

Col. Gupana said the alleged amazon was hit and killed during the initial heavy firefight on Sunday in Cabuga area, Sta. Theresa, Loreto, Agusan del Sur. Three other rebels (body count) were killed in this first engagement with operating troops of the 23rd Infantry Battalion and 26th Infantry.

In the ensuing firefight and running gunbattle, at least three other rebels were killed while unaccounted number of other rebels were reportedly wounded, the Brigade commander said.

He said that villagers saw the running rebels dragging along with them their undetermined number of comrades-in-arms towards the forested and mountain provincial boundary of Compostela Valley and Agusan.

Government operating troops already captured several high powered weapons in the enemy line, including nine M16 Armalite rifles, Garand and Carbine rifles and claymore mines.

“This operation in Cabuga area prompted Brig. Gen. Mario F. Chan, commanding general of the Army’s Northeastern and Northern Mindanao Fourth Infantry (Diamond) Division the deployment of more combat troops to beef up the 23rd IB and 26th IB forces in the area,” said regional Army spokesman Maj. Mitchele B. Anayron Jr.

As this developed, massive hot pursuit operation against the fleeing communist insurgents is still going on, added Maj. Anayron.

It was reported that no one was hurt on the government side. (PNA)
