MAGSAYSAY, Davao del Sur, Sept. 7 — Colonel Ricardo Rainier Cruz, commanding officer of the 1002nd Infantry Brigade based in Pulutana, Malungon, Sarangani, urged residents in Davao del Sur to coordinate with the police in identifying the body of a slain rebel in Barangay Malawanit, here.

The rebel was killed in a clash in the area around 10:30 a.m. Thursday following a tip from residents who reported the presence of the rebels in Sitio Blasan who were allegedly collecting revolutionary taxes.

Cruz said the rebels suffered heavy casualties, whose bodies were carried by their comrades while they were making their escape. They left one rebel, who was still holding his M-16 Armalite rifle, on the scene.

There was no casualty from the government side.

He said the soldiers already coordinated with the Davao del Sur Police Office for the proper disposition of the body.

“It is unfortunate that we have to lose one of our brothers when they have the option to live a normal life,” Cruz said.

He vowed to assist residents affected by the conflict through the delivery of the basic services of the government to their communities.

Cruz said the soldiers will provide security cover and also hold the door open for the rebels to surrender through the Social Integration Program. (PNA) FFC/JSGD/lvp
