MANILA, Aug. 02 —The Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (PCID) joins the nation in mourning the passing away of former President Corazon Aquino.

"To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return." (Holy Qur'an. 2:156). “May her memory live on in our hearts and minds, the PCID said in a statement.

”For the Bangsamoro, we remember her attempts to reach out to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in 1986, initiating peace talks with the intention of establishing an autonomous region for the Moros.

Her government, even when the talks failed, sought the creation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) by enshrining it in the 1987 Philippine Constitution."

Aquino signed the Organic Act of ARMM (Republic Act 6734) into law in August 1989.

”And while the dream for autonomy remains elusive, we recognize her genuine desire to achieve peace in Mindanao,” said PCID, whose lead convenor, Amina Rasul, was the former executive director of the National Youth Commission.

”We remember her (Aquino for giving Muslims a strong voice in Congress, choosing and campaigning for two Muslim candidates. Mamintal Tamano and Santanina Rasul were elected to the Senate because of President Aquino,” the group said, without explaining how.

Tamano is the late father of Atty. Adel Tamano of the Nacionalista Party. Rasul, Amina’s mother, run for reelection in 1998 but lost. (PNA)
