Tokyo stocks open sharply higher on Wall Street gains

TOKYO, July 21 — Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Tuesday after a three-day weekend, lifted by gains in the Wall Street.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the benchmark Nikkei-225 index gained 178.72 points, or 1.90 percent, from Friday to 9,574. 04. Japanese markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 18.05 points, or 2.06 percent, to 896. 34. The Second Section also advanced. (PNA/Xinhua)
