MANILA, July 11 — Malacañang expressed elation today over the signing of the poll automation contract, saying this is one of the priority programs of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo intended to ensure clean, honest, credible and orderly elections next year.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said in a radio interview the Palace is grateful to the Senate and to the House of Representatives for passing the poll automation law and providing funds for the project.

Consortium members Total Information Management and its foreign partner, Smartmatic of Colombia, signed the poll automation contract with the Commission on Elections last Friday.

“We are (also) grateful to the Commission on Elections for seeing to its implementation and we are calling on all sectors to help ensure the success of the 2010 elections through poll automation,” he said.

Remonde expressed hopes that with the signing of the agreement between Comelec and the consortium, “sana the next step, if we may suggest now, is to really re-orient and inform the voters about how poll automation works and how it will be beneficial for the country,” Remonde said. (PNA)
