MANILA, July 8 — To pave the way for the renovation of the former Singian Hospital into the Dr. Eva Macaraeg Macapagal National Center for Geriatric Health, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered Wednesday the immediate transfer of all Office of the President (OP) tenants in the four-storey building and their relocation to either the Mabini Hall or the Arlegui residence inside the Malacanang complex.

The President directed Senior Deputy Executive Secretary for Finance and Administration Ching Vargas to allocate office spaces for present tenants like the Presidential Assistant for Education, Undersecretary Mona Valisno and Presidential Spokesperson Undersecretary Lorelei Fajardo.

The President made an inspection of the building which will be renovated starting next month to the tune of P100 million.

In a program before the inspection, Congressman Bienvenido Abante (6th District of Manila) thanked President Arroyo “for making a dream come true for the district to have its first hospital. My district has not had the benefit of owning a medical facility for so many years.”

The President greeted Abante for his coming birthday on July 15, saying “I was supposed to inspect this by his birthday yet but I have to be in Egypt for the Non Aligned Movement meeting, which is very important.”

The President said the original site for the Geriatric Center was supposed to be the old house of Dr. Basilio Valdez, now a national treasure.

It used to house the Malacanang Clinic, until it was transferred to the Presidential Security Group Hospital. (PNA) LDV/OPS/ssc
