MANILA, July 5 – Former President Corazon C. Aquino is recovering from her illness, according to Mrs. Aquino's publicist and former Press Undersecretary Lourdes “Deedee” Siytangco.

Siytangco disclosed this in a text message to PNA Sunday, contrary to reports that the former president had succumbed to colon cancer.

Siytangco just attended the fifth day of the nine-day novena Mass for Mrs. Aquino’s recovery together with Makati City Rep. Teodoro “Teddy Boy" Locsin Jr., who condemned the circulation of text messages that Mrs. Aquino had passed away.

“You must be really the lowest form of life to do that if done with malice, deliberate misinformation," Locsin said in a report reaching Malacañang.

Locsin served as Mrs. Aquino’s press secretary.

Dr. Rolando Asuncion, a close friend and neighbor of Mrs. Aquino at West Triangle Homes, Quezon City, said those behind the rumors should instead “respect Tita Cory, respect (her) children, respect friends and all Filipino people."

Makati City mayor and United Opposition president Jejomar Binay and NBN-ZTE whisteblower Rodolfo “Jun" Lozada Jr., Manila mayor Alfredo Lim and former Senate President Franklin Drilon also attended the novena Mass.

Mrs. Aquino is still confined at the Makati Medical Center, where she was taken last June 23 due to loss of appetite. She had been undergoing radiation treatment for colon cancer, which was diagnosed in March 2008.

An icon of democracy, Mrs. Aquino is the country’s first woman president. She rose to power in February 1986 following the People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.

Mrs Aquino's daughter and television host Kristine Bernadette “Kris” Aquino thanked Filipinos for their support and prayers to her ailing mother.

In a statement over national television, the young Aquino said: “in behalf of the Aquino family, we thank all of you for supporting my mother who is recuperating at the Makati Medical Center in Makati City.”

”We know that we are public personalities. We know that our mother is a respectable public person of the Republic of the Philippines. We hope that people would understand what we are passing through,” Kris Aquino said over ABS-CBN’s The Buzz.

Kris Aquino also confirmed that it would be an indefinite stay at the hospital for her mother as she struggles against colon cancer which has left her physically weak.

Kris Aquino said her mother is in “strong fighting spirit” despite loss of appetite due to fluid build-up in her stomach.

She also said her mother was in a private room at the Makati Medical Center after she was moved out of the hospital’s intensive care unit. Only immediate family members were allowed to see her.

”We appreciate everyone who prayed for or sent messages of sympathy to my mother. We also wish privacy and solitude and appealed to the public for understanding,” Kris Aquino said. (PNA)
