MANILA, June 22 — An American tourist was arrested after he was caught in an alleged attempt to steal P500 worth of chocolate bars from a supermarket in Manila, on Monday morning.

The suspect, Robert Johnson, billeted at the Century Citadel in Bel-Air, Makati City, was turned over to Manila Police District (MPD) for custody following his arrest by a mall security guard.

Chief Inspector Froilan Uy, chief of the Manila Police District General Assignments Section (MPD-GAS), said Johnson was allegedly caught by a security guard at the SM City supermarket, Arroceros Street in Ermita, at 10:45 a.m.

He was trying to flee the mall with 19 chocolate bars which he hid in his bag.

Security guard Arnel Soriano told police investigators that he noticed that the American was pushing a steel cart filled with chocolate bars.

Out of suspicion, Soriano kept an eye on the American while going around the aisles.

Soriano said he then saw the American placing the chocolate bars inside his bag at an aisle with no shoppers around.

He then left but the security guard stopped him and asked him: “Sir, may I check your bag?”

However, Johnson did not stop and allegedly ran away prompting Soriano to seek help from his colleagues. They chased the American tourist and arrested him

Johnson is detained with the MPD-GAS pending the filing of a theft charge against him before the city prosecutor’s office.(PNA): /V3/JES/
