Pimentel supports PGMA's tax enhancement measures

Manila, June 12 -— Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. on Friday said that he will support the tax enhancement measures being proposed by the economic managers of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as mitigating measures to combat the global financial crisis.

According to Sen. Pimentel, he support the implementation of higher taxes on alcohol and tobacco and even putting picture warnings on ithe ill effects of smoking on packages of cigarettes.

Pimentel also said, if explained carefully and thoroughly, he will also support the proposed rationalization of fiscal incentives or the tax exemptions.

The minority leader is also inclined to support the simplified net income taxation system (SNITS) professional and self-employed.

According to the veteran lawmaker, these moves of the economic managers of President Arroyo will generate additional revenues and will narrow down the budget deficit of the government.

Last Thursday, President Arroyo called on the Legislativen Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting in Malacanang to tackles the proposal of the economic managers for revenue generating measures.

Among the revenue enhancement measures were: the proposal of Quezon City Rep. Danilo Suarez to impose a five-centavo tax on telecommunication companies through metering, the rationalization of sin taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, and the Simplified Net Income Taxation Scheme (SNITS).(PNA)
