MANILA, June 17 — The second suspect tagged in the robbery and rape of two women passengers inside a "colorum" van in Quezon City last week was killed allegedly during a scuffle with arresting policemen early Friday morning.
Chief Supt. Edgardo Tinio of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) identified the slain victim as Alfie Palana Turado, the same suspect identified only as alias "Buddy" in earlier reports.
Tinio said Turado was positively identified by the robbery and rape victims as the culprit, together with Wilfredo Lorenzo who was arrested by police operatives last June 13, 2016 in Barangay Kaligayahan, Quezon City.
Supt. Rodelio Marcelo, Chief of the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU), said they earlier received phone calls informing them of the whereabouts of Turado, particularly at M. Aquino St., Banlat, Barangay Pasong Tamo, Quezon City.
Tracker teams proceeded to the said place but Turado was not around. The operatives later received information that he was hiding in Barangay Obrero, Quezon City, hence, they coordinated immediately with the barangay officials who joined the police in scouring the area.
When Turado noticed the presence of police in the place, he scaled the roofs of some houses in an effort to elude arrest.
The commotion caught the attention of the residents who helped the police in cornering the suspect who was mauled and beaten up by the people.
Turado was brought to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) in Camp Karingal where he told investigators that he would accompany them in retrieving the stolen belongings of their robbery victims at his residence in Barangay Pasong Tamo.
However, upon reaching Tandang Sora Ave. near corner Visayas Ave., Turado suddenly grappled for the service firearm of one of his escorts identified as PO2 Randy Gandingco.
During the scuffle, the firearm went off accidentally, hitting Turado in the chest and neck. He was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center but died at around 3:58 a.m. Friday.
Meanwhile, two other female victims of the van robbery appeared at the CIDU and positively identified Lorenzo as the driver who robbed them of cash and cellphones.
The victims narrated that the incident happened last March 19, 2016 at Roosevelt Ave. corner EDSA, Barangay Veterans Village.
They were dropped off in front of 7-11 Convenience Store in Barangay Veterans, Project 7, Quezon City.
Tinio called on the other victims of the robbery with the same modus to go to the QCPD and identify and press charges against Lorenzo, who is currently detained at the CIDU. (PNA)
