MANILA, Feb. 15 (PNA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) together with partners from various sectors, government agencies and adoptive families urged the nation to support the advocacy of legal adoption as a way to help abandoned and neglected children find and have families of their own.

The agency made the call at the launching ceremony of the 2016 Adoption Consciousness Celebration Week conducted Monday at Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Auditorium in Quezon City.

The occasion seeks to create awareness on the importance of such process which gives adopted children a new identity, name and family.

In a speech of DSWD Undersecretary Vilma Cabrera, delivered by DSWD Protective Service Bureau Director Pacita D. Sarino, the agency said that there are still children in different centers and institution run by DSWD and non-government organizations who are still waiting for their chance to live in a normal family setting.

“We are grateful (for those supporting the advocacy)– but we are not yet done because as of this moment there are still significant number of children under residential care facilities,” said Cabrera.

Cabrera stressed that the agency is exerting all efforts to find a suitable place and families for abandoned and neglected children.

She added that as of 2015, there are 857 children situated in residential care centers or in child caring agencies.

Out of this number, 657 or 79.44 percent were issued with a certification declaring a child legally available for adoption (CDCLAA) as a prerequisite in filing for petition for adoption which is required under Republic Act 9523.

With this, she further called on the public to participate in the pro-active information dissemination in social networking sites such as Facebook.

According to her, this act can make a difference in giving these children a chance to live a better life.

This year's observance of the Adoption Consciousness Week is set from February 15-24 with the theme, “Legal na Ampon Ako: Anak na Totoo” (A Child Finds Worth in Legal Adoption).

The celebration's theme emphasizes that adopted children have the same rights as the biological ones. (PNA)
