BACOLOD CITY, Feb. 15 — The Department of Agriculture-Negros Island Region (DA-NIR) will gather about 5,000 farmers in Negros Occidental for the province-wide Farmers’ Forum on February 29 at the Manuel Y. Torres Memorial Coliseum and Community Center in Bago City.

The farmers and their leaders will be joined by DA officials headed by Secretary Proceso Alcala.

“We aim to inform farmers in the province on the programs initiated by the agriculture department and make them understand the agency’s development efforts more,” DA-NIR Executive Director Renato Manantan said.

He added that the current administration of DA wants to consolidate all its interventions since 2010 along with those of the provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, and get feedback from farmers.

“Our problem is that the department has been implementing a lot of projects, but the people would always say it has done nothing,” Manantan said.

Through the forum, the government will also be updated of the results of these interventions to determine whether these have helped the farmers or not, he added.

Manantan said the DA needs to know the difficulties and problems in the implementation of these interventions so that the next administration would know what should be set aside, what to continue, and what areas need improvement.(PNA)
