Laoag City celebrates 20 years of 'blessed' service

LAOAG CITY, Feb. 3 – Through the years, the ‘Pamulinawen’ festival has evolved into a popular celebration showcasing Ilocano culture in dances and drama with its festive mood of drawing thousands of tourists and balikbayans in the province.

Laoag City, for its 20 years of celebrating the event has also gained a mouthful of praises for its ecstatic display of local heritage into a month-long festivity with the community’s active participation.

Known as the ‘Sunshine City’ of the north, Laoag City has proven its stretch in the map not only through festivities but also with its awards, recognition, and honors received in good governance and public service.

Some of these are the 2014 championship award for the Search for Local Government Unit (LGU) Convergence; Public Employment Service Office Top Regional Performer; Champion for Regional Search for Cleanest, Safest and Greenest City; Recipent of Golden Globe Annual Awards for Filipino Achiever; Regional Gawad Kalasag Award; 2015 Seal of Good Governance.

The word ‘Pamulinawen’ means "Ilocano Maiden" which originated from an Ilocano song depicting a courtship between a man and a young lady in a window of a ‘kubo’ (nipa hut).

The festival this year stages the theme “Blessed”, echoing the city’s achievements and awards that brought pride and honor to all Laoageños.

This year’s celebration highlights street-dancing and pageantry, ‘Dulang’ (Food) and Calesa festival including dances and music.

The grandiose float parade of each public and private agency has been a highlight which draws tourists contributing to Ilocos Norte’s growing tourism industry.

The annual festival has also become an occasion for family reunions and school homecomings, beauty pageant, street dancing, balikbayan nights, and Ilocano stage plays.

For her part, Laoag City Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas said this year’s theme coincides with the continuing blessings the city receives.

She said that after 50 years of existence as a city, Laoag has been known to be one of the best cities in the entire country. This is the reason why Laoag and Ilocos Norte are known be one of the best tourist-destinations in the country.

“The theme depicts what Laoag was, and its transformation now that it became a “magnificent Laoag”, not only of the place but the people as well, through its continuous innovations and creations,” she said. (PNA)
