MANILA, Dec 26 (PNA) — More overseas market representatives of the Department of Tourism (DOT) are set to join the department next year to further promote the country as a destination, a tourism official said.

DOT Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr. told reporters that additional DOT market representatives across the globe will be acquired to provide information to foreign tourists who wish to know more about the Philippines.

Bengzon said that the new market representatives will be assigned in Bangkok, Thailand; Jakarta, Indonesia; and one for both France and Spain.

There are currently, seven overseas market representatives under the DOT namely Moscow, Russia; Dubai, UAE; New Delhi, India; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, there are currently 12 DOT overseas offices with three offices in the USA namely, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Other overseas offices include Frankfurt, Germany; London, United Kingdom; Tokyo, Japan; Osaka, Japan; Seoul, Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; Sydney, Australia; Beijing, China; and Shanghai, china.

Bengzon meanwhile stressed the importance of coming with a strategy to determine the Philippines’ market potential and ‘winnability’.

“In evaluating the markets, we only look at two things—market potential and ability of the Philippines to get a share of the market,” the DOT official said.

“Because the resources are limited we cannot be everywhere and because we cannot be everywhere, we have to prioritize,” he added.

Presently, the top 10 foreign markets to the Philippines are Korea, USA, Japan, China, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, UK and Canada. (PNA)
