SHARAN, Afghanistan, Dec. 26 — Two police and five militants were killed in a clash in Afghanistan's eastern province of Paktika on Saturday, deputy provincial governor said.

"Militants attacked security checkpoints in Urgun district at wee hours of the day. The clash left five attackers and two Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel killed," Attaullah Fazli told Xinhua.

The government established the ALP, or community police, in 2010 to protect villages and districts where army and police have limited presence.

An unknown number of militants were wounded in the gunfight in the province bordering Pakistan, the source added.

The Taliban has intensified attacks over the past months as the militant group tries to take territory and consolidate its positions ahead of winter in the conflict-torn country. (PNA/Xinhua)
